Among our autumn fine art offerings are a group of works by Birger Sandzen including an oil landscape of Utah poplars; three signed Thomas Hart Benton lithographs; two Parisian oils by Antoine Blanchard; Western and Midwestern landscapes by William Franklin Jackson, Robert Sudlow, Kathryn Cherry, and Richard Kruger; American scenes by Aaron Pyle, Letta Crapo Smith, and Knute Heldner; four Floridian landscapes by Franz Josef Bolinger; prints and multiples by Rockwell Kent, Kathe Kollwitz, Luigi Kasimir, and Yasuo Kuniyoshi; French animal bronzes including Ferdinand Pautrot, P.J. Mene, and Jules Moigniez; and Southwestern and Western bronzes including Francisco Zuniga, Joe Beeler, and Sherry Sander.

Beyond the fine art, collectors should explore dozens of pieces of fine jewelry, a group of antique books including two first edition Mark Twains, early incunable and manuscript leaves including Gutenberg, fine French and Bohemian art glass including Daum and Loetz, sterling silver, folk and primitive, and East and Southeast Asian carvings and decorative arts. The antique furniture is highlighted by an exquisite 19th c. Sèvres plaque-inset guéridon, a pair of Baroque walnut tables circa 1700, and fine Georgian period pieces.

Auction Highlight:

Original Birger Sandzen Oil on Board

“Gray Day, Logan, Utah” is a striking representation of Sandzen’s middle career. Measuring 14″ x 12″, this oil on board showcases a landscape adorned with poplars. The painting is executed in Sandzen’s characteristic rich impasto, with his signature bold brushstrokes of bright colors. It’s no surprise that artworks from this period of Sandzen’s career are the most coveted, as they capture his artistry at its peak.

The painting is signed at the bottom right corner and has a pencil-signed title and date on the reverse. It comes framed, with the frame measuring 21 1/2″ x 19 1/2″. It has been viewed and authenticated by the Birger Sandzen Memorial Gallery in Lindsborg, Kansas. Read the full article.

You can view the painting in person at our open house auction previews, Oct. 26th-27th. Bidding is open for the painting through Oct 28th, 2023. Explore the painting in the catalog here.
